Early on, I started singing Like our parents , a song composed and recorded by Belchior in 1976, popularized and immortalized in the voice of Elis Regina. I didn't even know I knew all the lyrics. I heard myself singing and feeling each of those words. My body shivered down to the skin of my neck.

Right after my cathartic and solitary performance, I wanted to hear it in Elis's torn and powerful voice. I was deeply moved. I've always loved this song, but I've never heard it understanding so much of what it says. Perhaps he had never listened to her with his whole body. There are senses and meanings that arrive only after.

Like our parents It refers to the dictatorship, a period of setbacks, violence and repression. Currently, many have clearly flirted with this past, wanting to resume it, reinstall it, "(...) even though we did everything we did...". Appearances do not deceive.

I then remembered Goethe's phrase:

What you inherited from your father, earn it to make it yours.

This phrase is quoted by Freud at the end of Totem and Taboo (1913). In this text, he speaks, among many things, of what is transmitted from generation to generation, in psychic but also social and cultural terms. It is a very rich text that deserves more detailed comments later.

But today, taking into account Belchior's music, which today has taken me by a great deal, as well as the political moment of the country, the question remained for me: What will we do with what we inherited from our parents? What will we do with everything we have done so far? Will we repeat, loving the past, or will we transform, aiming at a future of freedom and love? Which direction will we choose?

I always want to believe that arms and lips were made for hugs and kisses, and not for hatred and destruction. After all, hope is made in the bond. I hope he imposes himself.

Note: When I remembered Goethe's phrase, I went to the internet to find out its exact origin and in which text Freud quoted it. Then I went to my bookshelf to get the book Totem and Taboo and do something that gives me great satisfaction, Hunt Quotes . As if there was a magnet in my hand and in the respective book, I went directly to it. I had the feeling that there was only him on the shelf. With it in hand, I discovered that I had no idea where Goethe's phrase was. If I say I opened it directly to the right page, can you believe it? This type of event always amazes and fascinates me.
